Early Detection & Intervention are Key to Preventing Lymphedema

This clinic offers L-Dex testing with the SOZO Digital Health Platform.

Introducing SOZO by impedimed

What is SOZO?

WHAT IS BREAST CANCER-RELATED LYMPHEDEMA?

Lymphedema can be a devastating side effect of breast cancer treatment.  It is caused from surgical, radiation, or taxane-based chemotherapy treatments that have damaged the lymphatic drainage system in one or both arms.

Lymphedema is characterized by the buildup of lymphatic fluid.  This can cause painful and sometimes debilitating tightness in the affected arm.  It can also lead to infections such as Cellulitis, which require hospitalization.

Lymphedema develops in stages.

Stage 0 - Lymphatic drainage is impaired setting the stage for overload

Stage 1 - Accumulation of lymphatic fluid causes swelling

Stage 2 - Increased swelling and fibrotic tissue begins to develop

Stage 3 - Arm becomes large and misshapen

Lymphedema is reversible if it is caught in Stage 0 or Stage 1 and treated with simple at-home care techniques.  Once Stage 2 has been reached, it becomes a chronic condition that the patient will need to manage for the rest of their life.

Lymphedema Prevention Program

About the Lymphedema Prevention Program

Breast cancer-related lymphedema is a condition that can result from surgical, radiation, or taxane-based chemotherapy treatments.  It can lead to abnormal swelling and discomfort in one or both arms.  There is no cure for chronic breast cancer-related lymphedema. Once it develops, it requires lifelong management.

Our Prevention Approach

Breast cancer-related lymphedema of the arms develops in stages.  When it is caught early, it can be treated and stopped before it gets worse and becomes a lifelong condition.  Our new technology, the SOZO Digital Health Platform, provides an L-Dex score to help detect lymphedema before you feel noticeable swelling.  This early alert allows us to work with you to take steps to stop lymphedema from getting worse, or to avoid getting it at all.

SOZO with L-Dex

The L-Dex score helps us assess whether you are developing lymphedema before you feel noticeable swelling.  For best results, patients receive a baseline measurement before cancer treatment begins and are then tested regularly after treatment.  If your L-Dex score increases above normal levels, we will evaluate you for early signs of lymphedema.  If you don't get a pre-treatment baseline score, we can still use the L-Dex test to help detect lymphedema early.

Clinical Evidence - Extensively Researched

  • L-Dex has over twenty years of research with over 17,500 patients studied
  • The PREVENT trial demonstrated that routine monitoring with L-Dex combined with at-home intervention resulted in a 92% reduction in lymphedema progression at 3 years
  • PREVENT is the largest randomized controlled trial focused on lymphedema prevention studying 1,200 patients in 10 centers across the U.S. and Australia
